Adverbs

Have a look at these two sentences:

The kids are playing happily outside.

The bus got us to town quickly.

Happily and quickly are adverbs. Most adverbs are made by Adjective+LY:

Adjective:	bad	happy	heavy	quick	serious
Adverb:	badly	happily	heavily	quickly	seriously

Be careful! Not all words ending with +LY are adjectives. The following words are adjectives:

elderly

friendly

lively

lonely

lovely

silly

The difference between adjectives and adverbs

Let’s compare adjectives and adverbs:

Adjectives are used to describe nouns:	Adverbs are used to describe verbs:
*James is a quick hiker.* They stayed at home due to the heavy rain. We speak perfect English.	James hikes quickly. They stayed at home as it was raining heavily. *We speak English perfectly.*

Adjectives can also be used after these verbs: BE/FEEL/LOOK/SOUND etc:

Please be careful.

His results looked really bad.

She put the papers away carefully.

He did really badly in his exams.

Using adverbs with adjectives

Adverbs can be used before adjectives:

The hotel was relatively cheap.

We arrived in the city remarkably quickly.

We understood this lesson incredibly easily.
