Possessive adjectives
Possessive adjectives are placed before a noun:
“It’s my car.”
“Is that your new girlfriend?”
The form of the adjective depends on the possesser:
One possesser | Multiple possessers | ||
---|---|---|---|
1st person | my bicycle(s) | our bicycle(s) | |
2nd person | your house(s) | your house(s) | |
3rd person | Masculin | his computer(s) | their computer(s) |
Femenin | her hat(s) | their hat(s) | |
Nutral | its colour(s) | their colour(s) |
Possessive ‘s
‘s is used to say who an object belongs to. The order is as following:
- If there is one possesser:
possesser + ‘s + possessed object(s)
“It is Brian’s house.”
- If there are multiple possessers:
possesser + ‘ + possessed object(s)
“The girls’ room is tidy.”
‘s is also used to talk about relationships between people:
“His brother’s wife.”
Careful! When the plural of the possessers are irregular (they don’t end with s) you have to add ‘s: “These men’s shoes are black.” “The children’s bedroom is messy.” |
Whose
Whose is used to ask about possession. It is generally followed by a noun:
“Whose house is that?”
“Whose books are they?”
