The vital tenses
Learning these eight tenses is extremely important if you want to continue to improve your English. It’s a good idea to learn an example of a sentence, and the auxiliaries too.
- The Present Simple (active)
do / does
I work in a bank.
- The Present Simple (passive)
am / is / are
He is loved by many.
- The Present Perfect Simple
have / has
She has seen this film.
- The Past Simple (active)
did
We ate well last night.
- The Past Simple (passive)
was / were
I was born in 1995.
- The Present Continuous
am / is / are
I’m learning English.
- The Present Perfect Continuous
have been / has been
We have been working hard.
- The Past Continuous
was / were
I was looking for you.

Has / Is
‘s can mean either HAS or IS depending on the context of the sentence. Easy rule:
‘s + adjective = is
‘s + verb+ing = is
‘s + been = has
‘s + past participle = has
