Text & Audio: The life of Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde was an Irish born English poet, novelist and playwright, known for his clever, bubbly comedies. His greatest successes were Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892) and An Ideal Husband (1895), but his masterpiece is considered to be The Importance Of Being Earnest (1895). The play is an attack on people who take themselves too seriously, and is based around the double meaning of the name Ernest. Wilde married in 1884 and had two sons. However, in 1885 he was imprisoned for two years for homosexual practices. He moved to France when he was released, and died in Paris in 1900 at the age of 46.
