Trois Immigrés

Jol Eze

aged 47, from Nigeria

Jol is a biology teacher at NYU. She came from Lagos when she was 30. « I had the oppertunity to come to New York on a teaching visa. » After a year her husband came out to live with her. They fell in love with New York.

« It was strange at first because everything was so big! I couldn’t believe how tall the buildings were. It is very different to Nigeria! »

How does she find the people here? « The people are very friendly here. When people ask me where I’m from, it always starts a conversation! »

« I love the food in the USA, but the best thing about the USA is the independence. Over here I feel in control, nobody tells me what to do! »

Nikolay Gorev

aged 22, from Russia

Nikolay came from Omsk to California five years ago. At first he missed his country very much! He missed the snow, the food and his family. But now he has decided to stay, he has found a girlfriend, and they’re getting married next year.

Nikolay decided to move to California when he was 17. He wanted to study music, and go to the Music Institute of Roseville. « It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. » he said.

« When I first came here, it was so hot! Now, I don’t want to leave. I’m applying for citizenship now, and I’m getting married to my American girlfriend next year. »

« Some people couldn’t pronounce my name properly, so they just call me Nick. » Nick is a full time musician, and he loves his job!

Natchaya Abbasov

aged 29, from Thailand

Natchaya is her Thai name, but in the USA she’s known as Nat. Her family emigrated to Austin, Texas when she was 13. « I was very excited about moving. I had to leave all my friends and my grandparents, but I was happy to discover the USA! »

Nat now works as a fashion designer for Ralph Lauren in Austin. « I love my job, a job like this doesn’t exist in my village in Thailand! »

« The best thing about the USA is the food! You can eat food from every nation in the world! The USA is so diverse, and I love it! »

Nat’s grandparents moved to the USA four years ago, and Nat couldn’t be happier!
