Adverbs
Have a look at these two sentences:
The kids are playing happily outside.
The bus got us to town quickly.
Happily and quickly are adverbs. Most adverbs are made by Adjective+LY:
Adjective: | bad | happy | heavy | quick | serious |
Adverb: | badly | happily | heavily | quickly | seriously |
Be careful! Not all words ending with +LY are adjectives. The following words are adjectives:
elderly | friendly | lively | lonely | lovely | silly |
The difference between adjectives and adverbs
Let’s compare adjectives and adverbs:

Using adverbs with adjectives
Adverbs can be used before adjectives:
The hotel was relatively cheap.
We arrived in the city remarkably quickly.
We understood this lesson incredibly easily.
I’m terribly sorry for what happened.
Adverbs can also be used before a past participle:
No-one was badly injured after the accident.
