Expressions

We say “in the sun”, “in the dark”, “in the shade” etc:

It was too hot so we sat in the shade.”

Don’t go out in the rain, wait until it stops.”

We say “in ink”, “in pencil”, “in biro” etc:

Please write your name in ink.

If you’re not sure of the answer, write in pencil.”

We say “in capitals”, “in letters”, “in words” etc:

Write your name in capitals at the top of the page.”

Please rewrite the sentence in your own words.”

We say “fall in love”, “be in love”:

He is very much in love with his wife.”

Have you ever fallen in love with someone?

We say “in my opinion”:

It was a very easy test in my opinion.

“At the age of…”

We say “at the age of”, “at 110 km/h”, “at zero degrees”:

Water boils at a hundred degrees.”

I learnt to swim at the age of three.”

We were driving at 90 km/h.”

“On holiday” / “On a tour”

We say “on a trip”, “on a cruise”, “on tour” etc:

She’s going on a cruise in July.”

They’re away on business at the moment.”

We’re going on holiday to France.”

You can also say “go somewhere for a holiday”, “for my holidays”:

She went to Spain for her holidays.”

He’s going to Mauritius for a holiday.”

Other expressions

“On television”, “on the radio”:

I didn’t watch the news on television, I heard it on the radio.”

“On the phone”, “on the telephone”:

I’ve never met her, but I’ve spoken to her on the phone.”

“On strike”:

The postal workers are on strike this week.”

“On a diet”:

After Christmas I had to go on a diet!

On fire”:

He played with matches and set his trousers on fire!

“On the whole” (generally):

On the whole, I love contact sports.”

“On purpose” (intentionally):

I didn’t mean to upset you, I didn’t do it on purpose.”
