Verb + “Of”

  • accuse / suspect someone “of” something:

“They accused me of being lazy.”

“I suspected her of cheating on me.”

  • approve / disapprove “of” something:

“I disapprove of your choice, but I can’t stop you.”

  • die “from” / “of” an illness:

“He died of a heart attack.”

  • consist “of” something:

“My weekend consisted of gardening and cleaning.”

Verb + “For”

  • pay (somebody) “for” something:

“They didn’t have enough money to pay for the petrol.”

“We paid him for the service.”

  • We also say “pay a bill / a fine / tax / the rent” (no preposition):

“She pays her taxes on time every year.”

  • thank / forgive somebody (“for” something):

“I’ll never forgive her for what she did.”

“It’s ok, I forgive you.”

  • apologise (to somebody) “for” something:

“I had to apologise to them for what I said.”

  • blame (somebody / something) “for” something:

“They blamed me for the accident.”

  • We also say “somebody is to blame (for something)”:

“They thought I was to blame for the accident.”

  • We also say “blame something on somebody”:

“They blamed the accident on me.”

Verb + “From”

  • suffer “from” an illness:

“She suffers from alzheimer’s.”

  • protect somebody / something “from” / “against” something:

“Aloe vera protects you from mosquito bites.”

Verb + “On”

  • depend / rely “on” somebody:

“I knew I could rely on you.”

“I don’t know when I’ll get back from the shop, it depends on how busy it is.”

  • We also say “depend (on) when / where / how etc.”:

“I’m not sure if I’m going out later, it depends on how I’m feeling.”

  • live “on” money / food:

“He only has €300 per month to live on.”

  • congratulate / compliment somebody “on” something:

“She congratulated me on finishing the course.”
