Writing and saying dates

For the question “What’s the date today?”, we repond using ordinal numbers.

  • We can write the date two ways:

Wednesday July 25th ↔ Wednesday 25th July

  • We say the date like this:

“It’s Wednesday the twenty-fifth of July.”

Asking and giving the time

To give the time, we say the big hand first, and depending where we find it on the clock, we say to (left side) or past (right side).

Remember that in English, we do not use the 24h clock, we use the 12h clock.

Some examples:

5:20 It’s twenty past five. 11:30 It’s half past eleven. 2:45 It’s a quarter to three.
13:35 It’s twenty-five to two. 18:00 It’s six o’clock. 21:15 It’s a quarter past nine.

“What time” is used to ask about the time:

What time is it?”

“When” is used to ask about a moment:

When is your birthday?”

Years

Orally, years in English are separated into two parts. This is true for all years except for 2000-2009:

1999 = nineteen ninety-nine 1885 = eighteen eighty-five 2010 = twenty ten
2020 = twenty twenty 1939 = nineteen thirty-nine 1969 = nineteen sixty-nine

but

2003 = two thousand and three 2006 = two thousand and six 2009 = two thousand and nine
