Important Information

Closed questions (which can only be answered by “yes” or “no”) are constructed like this: Auxiliary (2) Subject (1) Verb (3)

“Are you coming?”

“Do you eat meat?”

Open questions start with a question word, followed by Auxiliary (2) Subject (1) Verb (3) :

“What are you doing?”

If the verb is accompanied by a preposition, it is put at the end of the question:

“What are you playing with?”

“Who”, “Which” and “Whose”

With “Who”, “Which” and “Whose”, you have to think of two possibilities :

  • When “Who” or “Which” are the subjects, or when “Whose” is followed by a noun that is the subject, the order of the words are that of an affirmative sentence:

“Who lives here?”

“Which of them is talking?”

“Whose book is on the table?”

  • When “Who”, “Which” or the noun that follows “Whose” are the compliments of the objects, then the form Auxiliary (2) Subject (1) Verb (3) is possible :

“Who are you talking to?”

“Which do you want?”

“Whose hat are you wearing?”

“How” and “What”

Do not confuse questions starting with “How” and “What … like” (Where “like” is an adverb, not the verb “love”).
When we want to find out the description of someone or something we use “What … like”.

“What’s the weather like?”

“What is she like?”

“What is she like?” is very different to “How is she?”

“How”

There are several question types that start with “How…” :

“How much” (price)

“How much” / “How many” (quantity)

“How old” (age)

“How far” (distance)

“How long” (duration)

“How often” (frequency)

Vocabulary

“Once a week.”
“Every month”
“Twice a year.”
“Two kilometers away.”
“The weather’s fine.”
