The Future: Going to
The future with intention is expressed with “to be going to + infinitive verb”:
“Tom’s going to iron his shirt.”
“I am going to have a sandwich.”
The Future with the Present Continuous
The close future is expressed with the present continuous and usually an indication of a close date:
“Mum’s working tonight.”
“They’re going on holiday on Saturday.”
The Future with “Will”
The future simple is expressed with the auxiliary “Will” / “Will not”. The sentences are formed: subject (1) auxiliary (2) verb (3) :
“I’ll close the window, it’s cold.”
“I’ll visit you tonight.”
To form a question, construct the sentences (2) (1) (3):
“Will you come to the cinema?”
The First Conditional
When we want to talk about a hypothosis and the sentence starts with “If + the present simple”, the concequence of the hypothoses is expressed with “Will + verb”. This structure is called the First Conditional:
“If it rains, we’ll stay at home.”
Avoiding Repetition
“To” is the particle used with infinitive verbs:
“To cook, to speak, to eat”
To avoid repetition, the infinitive verb can be reduced to its particle.
- The Future: Going to:
“Did you go shopping?”
“No, but I’m going to.”(“I’m going to go shopping.”)
- Verbs followed by “to” (to promise to, to want to, to forget to) :
“Did you go to the theatre?”
“No, but I wanted to.”(“I wanted to go.”)
